β The Horton Plains National Park, established in 1988, is located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, at an elevation ranging from 2,100 to 2,300 meters (6,900 to 7,500 feet). This park features a unique mix of montane grasslands and cloud forests, making it a haven for biodiversity. Many species found here are endemic to the region, adding to the park's ecological significance. A popular destination for nature enthusiasts, it is situated 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Ohiya, 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from the renowned Ohiya Gap/Dondra Watch, and 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Nuwara Eliya.

β The Horton Plains serve as the source for three major rivers in Sri Lanka: the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. Known as Maha Eliya Plains in Sinhala, the area is historically significant, with stone tools from the Balangoda culture having been discovered here. The landscape is characterized by expansive grasslands, interspersed with montane forests, and is home to numerous endemic woody plants. Sri Lankan sambar deer roam in large herds, and the park is recognized as an Important Bird Area, sheltering many bird species, some of which are not only endemic to Sri Lanka but also exclusive to the Horton Plains. One of the primary threats to the park is forest dieback, which some studies suggest may be due to a natural phenomenon.
